Why calendar age isn't total days ÷ 365

Calendar age counts whole years, then whole months, then whatever days are left over — the same way a birthday party actually works. It has to borrow days from the month before the "as of" date when the day-of-month is smaller than the birth day-of-month (turning 30 on the 31st of a month with only 30 days, say), and a February 29 birthday needs a defined rule for the three years out of four when February only has 28 days — this calculator uses February 28, the common convention.

Born June 15, 1990, measured as of September 20, 2026: that's 36 years, 3 months, 5 days — 36 full years to June 15, 2026, plus 3 full months to September 15, plus 5 more days to the 20th.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my age just today's date minus my birth year?
Subtracting years alone ignores whether your birthday has happened yet this year — someone born in December isn't a full year older on January 1 just because the calendar year changed. This calculator counts whole years up to your most recent birthday, then whole months, then whatever days are left over, the same way a birthday actually works.
What happens to a February 29 birthday in a non-leap year?
This calculator treats February 28 as the birthday in a year that doesn't have a February 29 — the more common convention (the other being March 1). It reverts to the real February 29 in the next leap year, so a leap-day birthday isn't permanently shifted.
How is total days lived different from years × 365?
Years times 365 undercounts by roughly one day for every four years, since about a quarter of years are 366-day leap years. Total days lived is instead the exact day-by-day count between the two calendar dates, so it's always precise regardless of how many leap years fall in between.
