How the tip and split are calculated
The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. Adding that to the bill gives the total, and dividing the total evenly by the number of people gives each person's share.
The formula
tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100) · total = bill + tip · per person = total ÷ people
Worked example
An $80 bill with a 20% tip is 80 × 0.20 = $16.00 tip, for a total of $96.00 — split between 4 people, that's $24.00 each.

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
This calculator applies the tip percentage to whatever amount you enter as the bill. Tipping etiquette varies — some people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, others on the total including tax — so enter whichever figure matches how you want to tip.
How is the per-person amount split?
The total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly by the number of people. This calculator doesn't split by what each person individually ordered — for an uneven split, work out each person's share of the bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share.
What's a typical tip percentage?
In the US, 15–20% is the most commonly cited range for restaurant service, with 20% increasingly treated as the default for good service.
